Jakarta (08/25) Regal Springs, a sustainable fish farming company, proudly announces its membership in the Sustainable Aquaculture Working Group of the Blue Food Partnership, led by Friends of Ocean Action. This initiative aims to maximize the significant potential of sustainable aquaculture in meeting the nutritional needs of a growing global population. The efforts are focused on combating climate change and achieving zero hunger.
Global seafood consumption has doubled in the past 50 years and is projected to double again by 2050. This trend has adverse implications for the environment and social well-being. Therefore, in harnessing the opportunities for increased food consumption from aquatic sources, there is a need for transparent and sustainable blue food value chains to ensure responsible utilization within safe limits.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), 34% of the world’s fish stocks are overfished, while another 60% are fished at their maximum sustainable levels. Additionally, between 30-35% of harvested fish are lost or wasted. With these conditions, the production of seafood becomes unsustainable and inefficient. Furthermore, it contributes to 8% of the total greenhouse gas emissions from human activities, including waste and food scraps.
“Our Tilapia products play a vital role in global food security. By cultivating Tilapia fish sustainably and responsibly, we contribute to the protein supply in the global food system and support the conservation of threatened marine fish stocks. With overfishing in certain regions, aquaculture will become a significant source of additional fish production and consumption,” said Alois Hofbauer, CEO of Regal Springs.
“Built from humble beginnings over 30 years ago, Regal Springs has provided livelihoods for rural communities, which remains at the core of our business. This is achieved because our founders adhere to the principle of ‘Doing Well by Doing Good.'”
“By enhancing the potential of sustainable aquaculture, Regal Springs actively participates in the Blue Food Movement to accelerate the transformation of the food system that benefits both humanity and the Earth. At the same time, Regal Springs stimulates economic growth and creates job opportunities for millions of people worldwide,” added Alois.
The Blue Food Partnership promotes science-based actions for a sustainable, healthy, nutritious, and affordable blue food value chain. Its members collaborate to create a sustainable blue food system by leading ideas, forming working groups, and engaging in public activities to enhance the critical role of blue food in broader food system transformations.
“Regal Springs welcomes the opportunity to contribute to responsibly cultivated Tilapia products with minimal impact, ensuring the availability of sustainable, healthy, nutritious, and affordable blue food. By collaborating with stakeholders in the Sustainable Aquaculture Working Group of the Blue Food Partnership, Regal Springs is confident in meeting the growing global food demands,” said Laurent Develle, EVP Group General Counsel-Head of Corporate Affairs at Regal Springs.
