Indonesia Emas 2045 is a long-term strategic vision launched by the Indonesian government to achieve a developed, prosperous, and globally competitive country by 2045. This year was chosen because it coincides with the 100th anniversary of Indonesia’s independence.

Towards the vision of Indonesia Emas 2045, the fisheries sector, especially the tilapia fish processing industry, has a strategic role in supporting economic development, food security, and environmental sustainability. With a projected per capita income of USD 23,000-30,300 and a maritime Gross Domestic Product (GDP) contribution of 15%, the development of this sector is crucial.

Opportunities of Tilapia Fish Processing Industry

  1. High Domestic Demand
The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) noted that tilapia consumption in Indonesia reaches 1.43 million tons per year. This shows the great potential of the domestic market for processed tilapia products, both fresh and frozen.
  2. Promising Export Potential
Indonesia’s tilapia exports in 2023 will reach 11,166 tons with a value of USD 81.7 million. The main destination countries include the United States and Canada, which shows the competitiveness of Indonesian tilapia products in the global market.
  3. Government Support
The steps taken by the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) to support the downstreaming of tilapia products, such as the development of ponds and fish processing centers, are in line with the national economic transformation agenda in the 2025-2045 RPJPN. This gives this industry a breath of fresh air because of the serious government support.

Challenges Faced

  1. Revitalization of Aquaculture Infrastructure
Revitalization of ponds is needed to increase productivity. However, the aquaculture infrastructure also needs to be continuously updated to meet international standards and increasingly detailed and stringent global market needs.
  2. Implementation of Sustainable Practices
Environmentally friendly management of fish resources is a major challenge. Sustainable practices are needed to ensure environmental sustainability while supporting national food security. Many farmers still need education regarding these sustainable practices.
  3. Increasing Competitiveness
To compete in the international market, tilapia products must meet standards such as Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certification. This international scale certification is needed to increase consumer confidence and maintain sustainable values.
