Harmful substances in food pose a serious threat to our health, especially when we are unaware of their presence in everyday food products. The Indonesian National Agency of Drug and Food Control (Badan POM) has banned the use of several hazardous substances in food, including borax, formalin, rhodamine B, and metanil yellow.
However, knowledge about these substances is still important for the general public. Even though their use has been banned for food by the Indonesian National Agency of Drug and Food Control (Badan POM), the potential for misuse still exists, which might be done by irresponsible individuals. Here are 4 of these hazardous substances:
1. Borax

Borax, commonly known as boric acid, is a chemical often used in industries such as glass manufacturing, cleaning agents, and even in some household products. However, when used in food, borax can pose a serious threat to human health.
Ingesting borax can damage the central nervous system, kidneys, and liver. Symptoms include nausea, abdominal pain, and even diarrhea. Even in small doses, borax can cause serious health disorders. Therefore, the Indonesian National Agency of Drug and Food Control (Badan POM) has taken decisive steps by prohibiting the use of borax in food products.
2. Formalin

Formalin, also known as formaldehyde solution, is a chemical commonly used as a germicide and preservative. However, the side effects of formalin exposure are highly dangerous to human health.
Ingesting formalin through the digestive tract can cause corrosive damage to mucous membranes, accompanied by symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and even disturbances in the central nervous system. Furthermore, formalin is classified as a carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), placing it as a substance with potential cancer-causing properties. Therefore, the use of formalin in food is prohibited by the Indonesian National Agency of Drug and Food Control (Badan POM).
3. Rhodamine B

Rhodamine B is a dye often used in the textile and food industries. However, in food, rhodamine B poses serious health risks. This substance can accumulate in body fat and exhibit strong protein binding.
Studies have found that long-term exposure to rhodamine B can cause liver dysfunction and even liver cancer. Due to its health risks, the Indonesian National Agency of Drug and Food Control (Badan POM) has banned the use of rhodamine B in food products.
5. Metanil Yellow

Metanil yellow is a synthetic dye used in several industries, including textiles and paints. However, when used in food, metanil yellow can cause various health problems.
Symptoms of consuming metanil yellow include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and in the long term, it may even increase the risk of bladder cancer. Considering its potential health risks, the Indonesian National Agency of Drug and Food Control (Badan POM) has taken steps to ban the use of metanil yellow in food products.
