Understanding SDG Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a global agenda adopted by the United Nations (UN) in 2015, aiming to achieve prosperity for all by 2030. Of the 17 goals, SDG No. 12 focuses on responsible consumption and production patterns. This goal is crucial to ensure that natural resources are used efficiently and sustainably while reducing waste and negative environmental impacts.

Here are some key targets of SDG No. 12:

  • Implementation of the 10-Year Framework: Implement the 10-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns, with all countries taking action, led by developed countries, while considering the capabilities and development of developing countries.
  • Sustainable Management of Natural Resources: By 2030, achieve sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources.
  • Food Waste Reduction: By 2030, halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses.
  • Waste Generation Reduction: By 2030, substantially reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling, and reuse.
  • Sustainable Practices in Companies: Encourage companies, especially large and transnational companies, to adopt sustainable practices and integrate sustainability information into their reporting cycle.
  • Sustainable Public Procurement Practices: Promote public procurement practices that are sustainable, in accordance with national policies and priorities.
  • Awareness for Sustainable Development: By 2030, ensure that people everywhere have the relevant information and awareness for sustainable development and lifestyles in harmony with nature.
  • Support for Developing Countries: Support developing countries to strengthen their scientific and technological capacity to move towards more sustainable consumption and production patterns.
  • Tools for Sustainable Tourism: Develop and implement tools to monitor sustainable development impacts for sustainable tourism that creates jobs and promotes local culture and products.
  • Rationalize Fossil-Fuel Subsidies: Rationalize inefficient fossil-fuel subsidies that encourage wasteful consumption by removing market distortions, in accordance with national circumstances, including restructuring taxation and phasing out harmful subsidies, taking fully into account the specific needs and conditions of developing countries and minimizing possible adverse impacts on their development in a manner that protects the poor and affected communities.

Progress and Challenges

Despite progress, the world is still far from achieving the targets to reduce food waste and other losses by 2030. The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted consumption and production patterns, with global supply chains interrupted and consumer behaviors changed. Responsible consumption and production must be integral to recovery from the pandemic.

The global economy also needs to accelerate decoupling economic growth from resource use by maximizing the socio-economic benefits of resources while minimizing negative impacts. Corporate sustainability reporting has tripled since the beginning of the SDG period, but the private sector needs to significantly improve reporting on activities contributing to the SDGs.

To achieve SDG 12, it is crucial to implement policies that support the transition to sustainable practices and decouple economic growth from resource use.
